How to Use 8171 SMS Service to Check BISP Status
Send your 13-digit CNIC number (no dashes) as a plain SMS to 8171. Within 1-5 minutes, you receive a reply showing your BISP eligibility status, payment information, and next disbursement date. Works on any phone — no internet or smartphone needed. Standard SMS charges apply.
Why the 8171 SMS Service Exists
BISP's core beneficiaries are Pakistan's poorest families — many of whom don't own smartphones, don't have internet access, and live in areas with no data connectivity. The 8171 SMS service was designed specifically for them. It provides the same eligibility and payment information as the web portal, but through basic text messaging that works on any phone from a Rs. 500 Nokia to the latest smartphone.
In practice, the SMS service handles millions of queries monthly. It's the most-used BISP information channel in rural Balochistan, interior Sindh, and tribal KPK areas where internet penetration is below 10%.
How to Use the 8171 SMS Service — Exact Steps
- Open the SMS/messaging app on your phone.
- Create a new message.
- Type your 13-digit CNIC number — digits only, no dashes, no spaces (example: 3520112345678).
- Send the message to 8171.
- Wait 1-5 minutes for the reply SMS.
Understanding the Reply Message
The 8171 reply SMS contains coded information. Here's what each type of response means:
- "You are eligible for BISP assistance" — your PMT score is below the threshold. You qualify for cash disbursements. The message may include your payment amount and next collection date.
- "You are not eligible" — your PMT score exceeds the threshold. You don't qualify under current criteria. If your circumstances have changed, visit a BISP office for reassessment.
- "CNIC not found" or "Data not available" — your CNIC isn't in the BISP database. You haven't been surveyed yet. Register at a BISP tehsil office.
- Payment status information — if eligible, the message shows your last payment date, amount, and the disbursement channel (ATM, Easypaisa, JazzCash).

SMS Troubleshooting
- No reply received. The service may be experiencing high traffic. Wait 30 minutes and try again. During disbursement weeks, millions of people check simultaneously, causing delays.
- Reply says "invalid format." You entered the CNIC incorrectly. Check that it's exactly 13 digits with no dashes, spaces, or letters. Resend.
- Reply in Urdu you can't read. Some replies come in Urdu. Ask a literate family member or neighbor to translate, or try the web portal which may display in English.
- Charged for the SMS. You pay standard SMS charges for the outgoing message (Rs. 2-3 without a package). The incoming reply from 8171 is free. If you have an SMS package, the outgoing message is covered.
- Service unavailable error. The 8171 system occasionally goes down for maintenance. Try again after a few hours. If the issue persists for 24+ hours, call the BISP helpline at 0800-26477.
8171 SMS vs Web Portal — When to Use Each
- Use SMS when: You don't have internet. You're in a rural area with no data coverage. You have a basic phone. You want a quick yes/no eligibility check.
- Use the web portal when: You want detailed payment history. You need to see your PMT score details. You want to verify specific Taleemi Wazaif or Kafalat status. You're filing a complaint.
8171 is the only official SMS number. Messages to any other number claiming to be BISP (8171X, 81711, etc.) are scams. Only send your CNIC to exactly 8171. Never reply to unsolicited messages from numbers claiming to be BISP.
